You Bless Me: My “Stop-Dwelling-On-The-Things-I-Don’t-Have-And-Be-Thankful-For-The-Blessings-I-Already-Have” Song

This past year brought many challenges to my family and me.  They ranged from very serious incidents, such as my oldest daughter’s diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease, to superficially annoying things, like multiple appliances breaking down at the same time.

Needless to say, I found that my prayers were flush with numerous material requests for miracle cures, a new cooktop, a washing machine that didn’t sound like it was going to explode during the spin cycle, etc., etc., etc.

Don’t get me wrong, God wants us to ask for what we need.  In fact, he already knows what we need before we ask.  But I found my prayers to be a little unbalanced toward the “asking” side, and very lacking in the thanksgiving department.

It seems that “thanksgiving” got set on the back burner of my prayer life, when in reality it should have been the main event.  I was so fixated on what I wanted and needed, that I was forgetting to thank God for the countless blessings that he had already so generously given, i.e. home, food, loved ones…and most importantly…the free gift of salvation.

So…as is often the case when I have one of my life-inspired epiphanies, I wrote a song.  In this case, a lighthearted one that reminds us to be thankful for the blessings that we have been given, as opposed to dwelling on the things we don’t have.

So without further ado, here is You Bless Me.

Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below.  Also, if you found your toes tapping a bit too much with this song, stay tuned…up next is a real tear-jerker.

Be Blessed,

What an uplifting song! We too frequently forget what we have and dwell on what we don’t have. Definitely worth toe-tapping to:)

  3. Love the song. So often we focus on the “gloom and despair” ignoring the awesome abundance of God. Thanks so much for sharing this song!

  4. I love the Thanksgiving Song. I have actualy been trying to always start off my prayers with the long list of things I’m thankful for. Now I have a catching tune to do it with. God Bless your work and family. In HIM, April Kral

God is speaking to many of us with this idea. I wrote a “Thanksgiving letter” of the “grace notes” in my life this year. This song is one that we can easily sing along with. I love it.

Yes, we all need this reminder…especially with a struggling economy, we tend to focus on all the stuff we don’t have. Thanks for your input Ivy!

Wonderful! I will be singing this today~offering it as prayer as I do the mundane things around the house that need to be done. Thanks so much, Stephen for putting to tune what I feel in my heart! Peace, my friend~

  8. You are such a fine talent, my friend! I love the lyric – so concise and clever. I wish I could play guitar like that. The way you play is a band in itself, rhythm, lead, percussion. Loved the part about more than I could ever drink up and describing salvation, the greatest blessing as “you bless my soul.” Simple and nice. The melody and your voice are a wonderful combination. When I read the title, I heard a song in my head and then I listened. Your song is better! Sending my love in Christ – may God continue to richly bless you and your beautiful family.

  11. I just started reading The Maker’s Diet this weekend. Looks like it would help your daughter out tremendously!

    • Stephen Bautista /

Yes, we’ve looked into the Maker’s Diet as wells as Nourishing Traditions and The Gaps Diet. We’re actually doing a combination of all those diets.
