This past year brought many challenges to my family and me. They ranged from very serious incidents, such as my oldest daughter’s diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease, to superficially annoying things, like multiple appliances breaking down at the same time.
Needless to say, I found that my prayers were flush with numerous material requests for miracle cures, a new cooktop, a washing machine that didn’t sound like it was going to explode during the spin cycle, etc., etc., etc.
Don’t get me wrong, God wants us to ask for what we need. In fact, he already knows what we need before we ask. But I found my prayers to be a little unbalanced toward the “asking” side, and very lacking in the thanksgiving department.
It seems that “thanksgiving” got set on the back burner of my prayer life, when in reality it should have been the main event. I was so fixated on what I wanted and needed, that I was forgetting to thank God for the countless blessings that he had already so generously given, i.e. home, food, loved ones…and most importantly…the free gift of salvation.
So…as is often the case when I have one of my life-inspired epiphanies, I wrote a song. In this case, a lighthearted one that reminds us to be thankful for the blessings that we have been given, as opposed to dwelling on the things we don’t have.
So without further ado, here is You Bless Me.
